There are country shows and then there’s Burghley
Four days of world-class eventing, far too many tempting shopping stands and, if previous years are anything to go by, a weather forecast that could change approximately six times before you’ve even left the house.
Taking place from 3rd–6th September 2026, the Defender Burghley Horse Trials falls right at that awkward point between summer and autumn. Which means deciding what to wear can be a little tricky.
You want something that feels put together, but not overdressed. Practical enough for a full day on your feet, but still something you actually feel good in.
So, whether you're heading to Burghley for the first time or your annual trip is practically marked in the calendar a year in advance, we've put together some of our favourite Burghley Horse Trials outfit ideas for 2026.
First things first: what do people actually wear to Burghley?
There isn't a formal dress code for spectators, so Burghley style tends to sit somewhere between classic country clothing and relaxed everyday style.
You'll see everything from dresses and trainers to jeans, shirts, quarter zips, gilets and riding boots.
The trick is not necessarily dressing up for Burghley. It's choosing something that can survive a lot of walking, a wander around the shopping village, sitting ringside and whatever the British weather decides to do that day.
And yes, comfortable shoes really do matter. Current guides consistently recommend footwear suited to plenty of walking, with boots or wellies becoming the more sensible choice if conditions turn wet.
The September-is-still-summer outfit
Early September doesn't automatically mean boots and knitwear.
If Burghley weekend gives us one last properly warm day, a striped maxi dress is one of the easiest outfits you can wear.
Pair it with comfortable sandals, a leather bag and a printed neck scarf to bring a little bit of country styling into the look without going full tweed-and-riding-boots.

The dress + trainers combination
For anyone planning on doing the entire cross-country course rather than simply admiring it from afar, trainers are your friend.
A fitted navy maxi dress keeps things feeling polished while clean trainers make it much more realistic for a full day at Burghley.
Add a tan bag and a country-inspired hat and suddenly a really simple outfit feels completely at home at the Horse Trials.
And dresses with trainers aren't out of place at Burghley either. Harriet Sperling was photographed at the 2024 event wearing a maxi dress with neutral Superga trainers, later adding a gilet as the temperature changed.
Wear it with: Navy maxi dress + white trainers + tan bag + hat.
The classic Burghley outfit
If dresses aren't your thing, you really can't go wrong here.
A good pair of jeans, a striped shirt and comfortable footwear is probably as close as you'll get to a fail-safe Burghley outfit.
Keep the shirt slightly relaxed, roll the sleeves if the sun appears and throw a jumper or quarter zip over your shoulders for later.
It works without feeling like you've tried too hard, which is basically the goal.
Wear it with: Straight-leg jeans + striped shirt + trainers or ankle boots + crossbody bag.
The country-show-but-make-it-2026 outfit
Not everyone going to Burghley wants the traditional tweed-and-tall-boots look.
For something younger and more relaxed, pair tailored or rugby-inspired shorts with a deck shirt, quarter zip or lightweight sweatshirt and trainers.
It still feels country, just considerably less predictable.
The "it might rain" outfit
Because this is England in September. We had to include it.
If the forecast looks questionable, forget trying to pretend otherwise.
Choose boots you don't mind getting muddy, comfortable jeans or trousers and layers that will keep you warm without becoming cumbersome.
A lightweight waterproof is worth leaving in the car even when the morning looks promising. Current Burghley guides specifically recommend breathable, lightweight waterproof layers rather than bulky insulated coats for changeable conditions.
The cooler September morning outfit
September mornings have a habit of making you think autumn has arrived before the sun comes out two hours later.
Layers are therefore worth thinking about.
Rather than wearing a heavy coat all day, start with a T-shirt, shirt or lightweight top and add a quarter zip, knit or gilet that can easily come off later.

If you're still standing in front of your wardrobe the morning of Burghley wondering what to put on, keep it simple.
