Having a Whale Of A Time | Published by Lois Swinnerton on September 21, 2018

Showcasing her collection for the first time at Burghley Horse Trials at the end of August, it seems Ellie received an incredible reception. She explains: “Burghley Horse Trials was incredible this year and exceeded all expectations, despite the previous year already having been a success for the brand! We were so delighted with how well received our new AW18 collection was, especially our brand new product the Norfolk Quarter Zip Sweatshirt, which proved hugely popular with everyone. It’s always so lovely to hear such positive feedback from both new and existing customers – who have been so supportive of the brand and it’s journey to date!”

The new collection features a range of products from long-sleeved t-shirts to comfy sweatshirts… perfect to pair with jeans for a trip out into town or with leggings for cosying up with a cup of tea (or glass of wine/gin) in front of the TV.

Whale Of A Time Clothing is a one woman band and Ellie explains she often feels the pressures of having to keep up with creating designs, but admits this is something which pushes her forward with the brand. It all began a few years ago, the brand growing from Ellie’s love of oversized sweatshirts. Ellie says: “I have always worn comfortable oversized jumpers but could never find a jumper that wasn’t heavily branded unless it was vintage. I bought a retro designed sweatshirt and it was then that the idea came to me that I could design my own clothing with minimal branding and unique designs to set the brand apart from what was available on the high street.”

Living in Norfolk, Ellie draws inspiration from the coast: “The North Norfolk coast inspires the products, rather than the designs, as I want to create products that people can wear from beach to bar. It’s important they are practical and stylish at the same time, and so seamlessly fitting in with the coastal lifestyle. Product inspiration is mainly taken from old retro designs of fashions gone by, using the bold block colours as our signature style throughout every collection, as these are what we have now become known for.”

Oh and if you are wondering where the name came from… “‘Whale of A Time’ was created as a fun twist on my surname, as I wanted Wales to be something to do with the brand identity”, says Ellie.

The pieces are designed to be worn from beach to bar and importantly for me, from country to city. Whether you are heading out for a day’s sightseeing in central London, spending the day exploring a new countryside or coastal walking route, or simply just cosying up for a night in, Whale Of A Time has you covered.

With so many beautiful piece to choose from, I have decided to put together a few of my favourites from the AW18 collection as well existing collections as they are just so gorgeous… somehow I managed to narrow it down to just four.

First up is the classy Omura Pink and White sweatshirt.

Next it’s the timeless Padstow Deck Shirt in White and Pink.

My two favourites though have to be the elegant Arnoux Sweatshirt in Pink, Blue and White (as you may have guessed by now, I love pink white and blue) and the super stylish quarter zip sweatshirt and it seems this feeling is echoed by Ellie herself as she explains, “My current favourite product is the sweatshirt, as this was the first product we ever made. Having said that, this is going to change when our AW18 collection launches, as I have fallen in love with our new product which is a quarter zip sweatshirt”.

You’re fresh from Burghley Horse Trials, how was the event for you? Burghley Horse Trials was incredible this year and exceeded all expectations, despite the previous year already having been a success for the brand! We were so delighted with how well received our new AW18 collection was, especially our brand new product the Norfolk Quarter Zip Sweatshirt, which proved hugely popular with everyone. It’s always so lovely to hear such positive feedback from both new and existing customers – who have been so supportive of the brand and it’s journey to date!

Where did it all begin for Whale of a Time clothing? I have always worn comfortable oversized jumpers but could never find a jumper that wasn’t heavily branded unless it was vintage. I bought a retro designed sweatshirt and it was then that the idea came to me that I could design my own clothing with minimal branding and unique designs to set the brand apart from what was available on the high street. Soon after, I decided to start my own business supplying products with a playful design that are affordable and cater for both school students and university students. The name ‘Whale of A Time’ was created as a fun twist on my surname, as I wanted Wales to be something to do with the brand identity. After a lot of work, I got my first ever sweatshirts made which proved very popular amongst my friends and, gradually, through word of mouth and our Facebook page, the brand started to grow. I brought out more designs and then started a website and social media pages and it’s taken shape from there!

Your designs are beautiful – where do you get your inspiration from? The North Norfolk coast inspires the products, rather than the designs, as I want to create products that people can wear from beach to bar. It’s important they are practical and stylish at the same time, and so seamlessly fitting in with the coastal lifestyle. Product inspiration is mainly taken from old retro designs of fashions gone by, using the bold block colours as our signature style throughout every collection, as these are what we have now become known for.

Do you have a favourite amongst your products? My current favourite product is the sweatshirt, as this was the first product we ever made. Having said that, this is going to change when our AW18 collection launches, as I have fallen in love with our new product which is a quarter zip sweatshirt.

You are a one-woman band – what are the challenges of this? I find there is a lot of pressure to constantly keep things fresh and new by bringing out new products and designs, but this is also great in a way, as it pushes me to continue to grow and expand the brand.

What does your typical day look like? A typical day for me is packaging all the orders and doing emails, the afternoon is then spent on PR and Social Media, creating content and keeping the website up to date.

What would you say is key to your success? The key to my success is having belief yourself and surrounding yourself with family and friends who also believe in you and the brand.

What would you say to other like-minded individuals who have a business idea in their heads? Again, believe in yourself and just do it. You’ll never know if you don’t try. Find a similar brand or company you admire and strive to be better!

You have recently been to the Game Fair – how much preparation is required for an event like this? A lot of preparation goes into shows, from booking them all to designing the stand and ensuring your products are displayed in a way which reflects your brand image best. Knowing how much stock to take to a show is also a bit of a challenge, but once you have done a few, you start to know what’s a good amount to take.
